Woody Austin had a super week, finishing in a tie for fifth at the World Golf Championship-Accenture Match Play Championship in the Sonoran desert. Austin opened with an opening day win over Toru Taniguchi that Austin called “a dream match…I did what I was supposed to in match play,” he told PGATOUR.COM. “I never gave him a hole.”
In his best finish of the 2008 PGA Tour, Austin went on to defeat Adam Scott in 19 holes, then beat his friend Boo Weekley before losing to Henrik Stenson. Tiger Woods won the tournament.
Austin said he enjoys the head-to-head challenge of match play. “I enjoy the mano-a-mano aspect of it…. Anyone can play good enough on any given day to win, and that’s the neat thing about it.”
PGATOUR.com noted that the four Sandler TrainingSM golfers “will sport the Sandler Training logo on their golf hats and apparel during the 2008 PGA TOUR season.” PGATOUR.COM noted that Austin, Rollins, Bateman and Uresti “are all coming off strong 2007 performances.”

Rollins is no stranger to playing well at the FBR where he placed runner-up last year. He finished this year’s tournament 6-under and posted 16 birdies over the four rounds. Rollins was stalking the lead after reaching 8-under during the third round, but bad luck on consecutive holes dropped him two strokes back.
Austin opened with a 68 and played consistent golf the rest of the way. He mastered the par-4 No. 2 hole, which he birdied all four rounds. Austin drained 14 birdies.
Rollins and Austin will skip this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Austin will return to his alma mater where he will be inducted into the University of Miami’s Sports Hall of Fame. Austin owns the lowest tournament average score in the school’s history.
